Year 5 Visit to Stanley Head

This week the two year 5 went to Stanley Head, the classes split into groups. First group – Bush-craft. Second group – orienteering

Orienteering:

1.       Discussed what maps are used for and how to use them for position and direction.

2.       Identified significant places on a map.

3.       Worked in team to carry out an orienteering challenge around Stanley Head.

Bush- craft:

1.       Recapped our story so far. Michael has arrived on the island (Kensuke’s Kingdom). What will he need to survive? Water, shelter, oxygen and food.

2.       Discussed how to prioritise these basic needs for human survival.

3.       Built a shelter

4.       Tested the shelter under extreme weather conditions e.g. throwing water over it to see if it is waterproof

5.       Foraging trail – walk of the forest to find foods suitable to eat. Tasted leaves from the beach tree. Discovered they were bitter to taste, but were in fact safe to eat.
